Wear-resistant conveyor belt for the recycling industry

Wear-resistance is an important requirement for conveyor belts used in the recycling industry. Due to the fact that large quantities of heavy and sharp materials are processed, regular conveyor belts tend to break down quickly, while some even have to be replaced within a month.

For one recycling company, we developed a special wear-resistant conveyor belt by applying a coating to the belt. For over 2.5 years, this company has been processing all kinds of sharp-edged  and heavy (metal) objects with this bespoke conveyor belt without any problems.

Developing a wear-resistant conveyor belt

A key requirement in developing a customised conveyor belt - in this case a wear-resistant conveyor belt - is full insight into our customer's production process. In this specific case of a recycling company, a BTE specialist looked at the process and the materials that are processed. This allowed us to put together a customised conveyor belt that met all of our customer's needs.

The recycling industry processes a lot of metal or other sharp materials such as pieces of wood with nails in them. To minimise interruptions of the production process due to maintenance, a conveyor belt needs to be wear-resistant and built to last. This will keep machine downtime low.

In this specific case, we applied an additional wear-resistant coating to a PVC conveyor belt to create a wear-resistant conveyor belt that has meanwhile clocked up 2.5 years of service. This is in stark contrast to regular conveyor belts that had to be replaced within a month of going into service. The customised conveyor belt we supplied is a PVC conveyor belt with a 0.9mm Hytrel® coating.

The wear-resistant PVC conveyor belt we supplied

Impregnated PVC conveyor belt, petrol colour type 32-76IV85, equipped with an additional wear-resistant 0.9mm-thick coating of Hytrel®. This endless PVC conveyor belt was joint together using a so-called finger joint. Conveyor belt dimensions: 6,300mm x 1,200mm.

Advantages pf the wear-resistant conveyor belt

2.5 years down the line, the conveyor belt we supplied is still working excellently. This long service life has seen our customer save a lot on conveyor belt replacement costs. Aside from that, machine downtime has also been cut to a minimum, making the recycling plant even more productive.

Coating a conveyor belt

BTE's PVC conveyor belts are made up of one or multiple layers of fabric, and treated with an additional coating with a specific composition, colour, and thickness. In the case of the recycling industry, standard conveyor belts do not meet the high standards that are set to ensure a long service life. To make a conveyor belt meet these high standards, a Hytrel® coating was applied to upgrade the conveyor belt for specific use in the recycling industry. By applying a coating to the conveyor belt, we were able to develop a customised conveyor belt that meets the user's needs and requirements.

We coat conveyor belts that, for example, need an extra-strong or extra-thick top coating. We can also customise conveyor belts by fitting them with a special profile.

Hytrelcoating

The coating used on the conveyor belt for the recycling industry, 0.9mm Hytrel®, gives the PVC conveyor belt a strong and wear-resistant top coating, considerably extending the belt's service life. Besides Hytrel, BTE can also apply other coatings to conveyor belts.

Hytrel® can still be used in applications where wear-resistance is key. These include:

  • Recycling
  • Die-cutting machines
  • Cutting machines
  • Punching machines
